Trying To Live Free - Mowing The Lawn
One of the things I thought about when trying to live free is mowing the lawn. I thought about it when it started getting warmer out and it was time to call my landscaper and have him come out to cut the lawn again.
But then I thought, I can do this myself for free. So I started looking into lawn mowers to buy and I just thought that I would buy a gas powered mower and be done with it. But then I thought, even though I would be cutting the grass and saving that money I would pay the landscaper, but I still had to pay for gas and then it wouldn't be free.
So the next thing I thought of was to buy a regular push mower that didn't require any gas or electric to run it. So I went on Amazon's and Walmart's websites and found a bunch and they were pretty cheap. I decided to go with one I found on Walmart's website since I had a location close to home and I could do pick up and save on shipping. It was about $90 (link to product below), and I got it in a few days. I was excited to try it out and also save about $80 a month because I wouldn't have to use my landscaper anymore.
It was easy to set up. No tools required and I was ready to go. A couple of weeks ago I took it out and started to mow the lawn.
Man was that exhausting. The grass grew pretty long so it was tough to cut the grass. Plus in the front of the house there was mulch everywhere on the lawn and it kept getting stuck and I had to turn the mower over to unjam it numerous times.
Once I got done in the front, (even though I was ready to call it quits) I started in the back.
At first it wasn't too bad. I got about half way done and then I got to the parts of the grass that was super long. That was tough. My back was killing me and I missed a bunch of spots. I was exhausted and done. So I just let it go and thought I will give it another chance next week, if not, I am going to have to get a gas powered mower. I didn't know how much more I could handle.
Next week came and I was ready to give it another shot. I mowed the front and it was still a pain. Every couple of minutes I had to unjam the mulch from the mower. Then I moved to the back and did the whole back yard with really no problems. I didn't miss nearly as many spots and the family said it looked good. Not professional but good.
So I was happy with that and decided I was going to keep the mower and do it this way. I just have to prepare myself next year when the grass grows long and I have to cut it the first time. But it won't be so bad because I will be prepared for it. I live on a quarter acre so it's not so but but not a small yard. So it takes some work but is not so bad and I get some exercise in the process.
I was happy with the results and was one small step closer to trying to live free.

Yes, the 'good old days' style muscle powered mower from about 100 years ago. You'll be in better shape than your neighbors, if you don't have a heart attack! You may have to rake up the 'mulch' that keeps causing you problems. Put it on your flower beds.
ReplyDeleteI will try that next time... not the heart attach but the raking the mulch haha
